Overview
Mitron is a homegrown short-form video app based in Mumbai. The app received heightened attention after the Indian government banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps last month. Mitron raised $5 million in a funding round led by Nexus Venture Partners with participation from 3one4 Capital and Lets Ventures. The round also included several angel investors named in the article. The company plans to use the capital to accelerate product development, increase user engagement, and hire new talent. Mitron is an Indian short-form video app launched two months earlier by co-founders Shivank Agarwal and Anish Khandelwal. The app enables users to create and share short videos and positioned itself as a homegrown alternative to TikTok. Within two months of launch it crossed 100 million downloads and holds a 4.4 rating on the Google Play Store. Mitron has received seed funding of Rs 2 crore from 3One4 Capital and LetsVenture, disclosed two days after the Indian government banned 59 Chinese mobile apps. The app was briefly removed from the Google Play Store on June 2 for violating Google’s “spam and minimum functionality” policy but was restored shortly thereafter. With Chinese competitors barred, Mitron now faces domestic rivals such as Chingari in India’s hot short-video market.
