Overview

Mobento is a London, UK-based online educational video startup founded by Sumner Murphy. The company has developed a video learning environment that combines technology with a commitment to high-quality content. Its service provides a library of educational videos to schools and students through a website and a line of mobile apps. Mobento also licences its technology platform to organizations that need easy-to-use services to archive and distribute their own in-house video libraries. Customers include iHeed, a body for promoting innovation in health education. The company closed a £1.1m seed funding round in June 2013 backed by unnamed angel investors who follow the London Tech City start up scene. Mobento provides a search service that finds spoken words in videos and displays a timeline indicating where those words appear. The system uses fully automated, machine-generated translation and indexing rather than human transcription, and the company says it can extract over 90% of significant keywords when auto quality is high. Mobento does not index the entire web; it operates on an indexed library of videos and houses about 250 videos from Stanford lectures, Khan Academy, and TED. The site was built by founder Sumner Murphy and a small team (three developers and a designer) after the company was founded in December 2011; Murphy previously ran a web development consulting firm that did work for the educational sector. Mobento soft-launched the service and says it is in discussions with unnamed educational bodies and hopes to establish partnerships with video providers. Its stated revenue model is to generate revenue by licensing the system to other video content owners, and the company has an undisclosed amount of seed funding from private investors closed in January 2012.
