Overview

MocoSpace operates a mobile-focused social network that launched in 2006 and offers a website, a feature-phone site, a smartphone site, an iPhone app and a recently launched Android app. The Android app supports live chat, photo uploads, profile viewing and commenting, and message notifications. The network reports over 14 million users and about three billion page views per month, primarily among 18–34-year-olds. MocoSpace monetizes through virtual currency sales and advertising. The company’s audience plays roughly one million games per month, and it plans to expand social gaming by launching browser-based mobile social games and partnering with mobile web game developers. The new funding will also support hiring developers and engineers to build its gaming platform. MocoSpace operates a mobile-only social network that delivers social features and content exclusively via mobile phones. The service reports about two million members and roughly one billion mobile pageviews per month. Its user base and pageviews doubled since August, indicating rapid recent growth. The company does not integrate with online social networks such as Facebook or MySpace; CEO Justin Siegel and the CTO have said importing profiles is not currently relevant. Competitors in the crowded mobile social networking space include Aka Aki, Loopt, Mig33, Pelago, Twipster and Zannel. MocoSpace focuses on mobile-native engagement rather than connecting users to web-based social networks. MocoSpace is a mobile-only social network that offers mobile-native registration, friend suggestions by proximity or online status, chat, photo and video uploads, and a stripped-down blog similar to Twitter. The service is optimized for phones and reports that almost all of its traffic comes from mobile devices. At the time of the article it was serving close to 500 million monthly page views and approaching 1 million registered users, with roughly 6,000 new users signing up daily. MocoSpace raised $3 million in a Series A financing in January 2007 from General Catalyst, Pilot Group and Michael Deering. The company is Boston-based with about 15 employees split between Boston and Israel and launched its mobile network the prior year. The startup is positioning itself as a contender to be the "MySpace for mobile."
