Overview
Mode Analytics offers a data analytics platform that combines machine learning, business intelligence and big‑data tooling—including SQL editors, notebooks, reporting tools and dashboards—primarily aimed at data scientists. The company has been adding features to broaden access, such as SQL and Python tutorials for less technical product teams so they can structure queries for data scientists to execute. Mode says its tools can produce answers to data queries in minutes and supports collaborative workflows to speed complex analysis. Pricing is freemium: a free "Studio" tier plus Business and Enterprise tiers priced by size and usage. The platform operates at scale—Mode reports 830 million query runs and 170 million notebook cell runs for 300,000 users and a customer list covering 52% of the Forbes 500 (including Anheuser‑Busch, Zillow, Lyft, Bloomberg, Capital One, VMware and Conde Nast). Mode was founded in 2013 by Derek Steer, Benn Stancil and Josh Ferguson. Mode Analytics offers a namesake visualization service with a sleek query editor that lets teams write and run requests, turn them into graphs, and securely share results across an organization. The product emphasizes simplicity and collaboration, enabling multiple users to share work and assemble reports. Recent product additions target larger teams, including the ability to include multiple graphs in a single report and other productivity features. Mode is also expanding data connectivity, adding support for Snowflake's cloud data warehouse and the open-source Presto query engine. The company faces competition from established data-visualization vendors such as Tableau and Qlik, but has attracted numerous large customers. Financially, Mode has now raised a total of $10.4 million and plans to use new funding to build more features and support growth. Mode Analytics offers an online service for collaboratively analyzing data, hosting a central repository of work and surfacing it to analysts in real time. The platform lets analysts address problems immediately without needing to recreate prior work. Users can analyze data by uploading it to Mode’s cloud storage or by connecting their own databases. The service will be available for individuals and teams and will be free for anyone contributing to the open data community. Led by CEO Derek Steer, who previously worked at Yammer, the company is headquartered in San Francisco, CA. Mode intends to use recently raised funds to continue developing the product.
