Mode is a five-year-old, San Francisco–based collaborative analytics platform that empowers data scientists with an integrated SQL editor, Python and R notebooks, and a visualization builder. It offers a freemium product called Mode Studio to introduce data teams and drive enterprise adoption. Mode reports 600 organizations now pay for the product and another 2,000 companies use the free offering. The company targets enterprises with up to 5,000 seats and largely serves a U.S. audience. With its new capital, Mode plans to expand geographically, hire employees outside San Francisco for the first time, add new features, and grow each department with particular focus on community efforts. The recent Series C brings Mode's total funding to $50 million. Mode was founded by former Yammer executives Derek Steer, Josh Ferguson and Benn Stancil to build tools that make analysts and data scientists more productive. Its core product is a collaboration service likened to GitHub but for data scientists, focused on surfacing analyses written in R, SQL and Python. The platform automatically surfaces data analysis within an organization so analysts don’t always have to start from scratch, and contributions will be available for free to community contributors. The first set of products is still under development, and the team is recruiting large companies as beta testers, including Yammer. Mode positions itself against other open-data and collaborative analytics startups such as Enigma.io. The company has begun hiring plans funded by its recent seed raise to build engineering and design capacity.
