Mode is a San Francisco startup that has developed a software-defined core network (SD-CORE) called Mode Core, designed to complement SD-WANs by providing the performance and reliability of MPLS while retaining the elasticity and affordability of cloud services. The technology grew out of Cornell research by Kevin Tang and Nithin Michael, who created the first mathematical description of packet-switched network behavior and an automated routing method that requires no manual intervention. By partnering with Ericsson UDN and more than 100 other infrastructure providers, Mode can quickly spin up private networks without owning telco assets. Target use cases include interactive streaming, multiplayer gaming, real-time machine learning, and remote command-and-control applications. The company positions its service as markedly cheaper and easier to manage than traditional telco-run private WANs. To date, Mode has secured $24.3 million in venture funding, enabling continued product development and network expansion.
