Module Innovations is developing ASTSENSe, a compact, printer-sized rapid antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) device that delivers a UTI diagnosis and antibiotic resistance profile from a urine sample within two hours. The ASTSENSe test works with the company’s USENSe bacterial identification test and uses a proprietary nanoparticle complex whose size change correlates with bacterial growth to determine susceptibility. Results are displayed on the device and can be sent to a clinician’s phone. The technology targets common uropathogens including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococci faecalis, and aims to shorten diagnostic times that currently take days and require advanced labs. Module positions the product as an affordable, rapid diagnostic that could improve patient outcomes and antibiotic stewardship, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. CEO Sachin Dubey said CARB-X’s funding and expert support will help develop ASTSENSe and speed effective treatment for UTI infections.
