Mojiworks develops games built for messaging platforms such as Facebook Messenger and iMessage. Its two top titles, MojiQuest and MojiBowling, have been downloaded 1.5 million times. The company says it will use the new capital to launch additional games, beginning with QuestFriends for Facebook Instant Games slated for release by the end of 2017. Mojiworks plans to grow its staff from 10 to 25 over the next year. Leadership views messaging platforms — which include Facebook Messenger’s more than 1.3 billion monthly active users — as a major opportunity for low-friction, high-engagement gaming. The company was founded last year and is based in Surrey. Mojiworks is a UK startup focused on turning Apple’s iMessage into a social gaming platform. The company launched MojiQuest as its first title to test the market and validate gameplay on iMessage. MojiQuest is a collaborative battle game built in 60 days using proprietary technology the team developed specifically for iMessage. Mojiworks plans to build a portfolio of games across multiple genres and has about 25 game concepts in development. CEO and co-founder Matthew Wiggins says the startup emphasizes collaboration and tight friend-group play that messaging relationships enable. The founding team comes from Wonderland, a studio acqui-hired by Zynga in 2011, and the company positions itself against entrants like Zynga and King while aiming to be a dedicated multi-title publisher for chat platforms.
