Overview

Moment builds camera lenses, cases and other accessories (including a Mobile Photography Kit) aimed at improving smartphone photography. Its Mobile Photography Kit — a case, lens and lens cap — is sold in 50 Apple stores and on Apple’s website. The company sells three lenses (wide, telephoto, macro) at $99 each and cases priced at $49.99 and $69.99, plus shutter-enabled cases that pair with the Moment app. Moment reports it is profitable and has grown three times year over year, and the team is about 15 people. Leadership says the company is focused on scaling retail distribution, refining design to work well with phones (especially iPhone), and expanding the team as it grows. Moment designs attachable wide and telephoto lenses and smartphone accessories that connect to iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Nexus phones via a metal plate. The company launched with a successful Kickstarter that raised $451,868 from more than 4,500 backers and has begun shipping lenses to those supporters. Its lenses are available for pre-order at $99 each, and Moment says it is developing accessories and working on compatibility for the iPhone 6. Leadership says the firm plans to build a family of capture products and will focus on brand and customer experience over the next 12 months. Moment faces competition from OlloClip but cites a large market of billions of phones and trillions of photos. The company is using crowdfunding plus external seed financing to refine product-market fit and expand its offerings. Moment designs and sells add-on smartphone lenses, debuting an 18mm Wide and a 70mm Tele to extend mobile photography capabilities. The lenses are engineered with cinematic-quality construction and are claimed to produce images free of distortion and chromatic aberration. They are designed to work with or without phone cases and to support a broader set of devices than some rivals, including Samsung Galaxy S2, S3, and S4 in addition to Apple devices. Moment launched the product via a Kickstarter campaign and raised $50,000 to fund production. The company aims to ship the first lenses by June and to build a hip, young brand around mobile photography.
