Moonfruit offers a consumer-friendly site builder that lets users design visually in Flash and then renders sites in Flash or HTML for web, mobile and tablet browsers. Its core customers are small businesses, and most revenues come from premium paid subscribers. As of February 2011 Moonfruit had 3.4 million sites built (up from 2.4 million the prior year), 300,000 users and 50,000 premium subscribers (a 40% increase since January 2010); turnover has risen 51% since January 2010. The product roadmap includes integrated blogging with RSS rolled into the core offering in April and an editable shop launching in July with an iOS app; Moonfruit has also integrated a customized Zendesk. The company competes with Wix but positions itself on cross-platform rendering and design-focused ease of use. About 30% of customers are in the U.S., and Moonfruit is the no.1 DIY website builder in the U.K. Moonfruit provides a drag-and-drop Flash interface and a freemium subscription model with premium upgrade paths for building simple, elegant websites. Founded in the UK in 1999, the company says it has enabled over 2.8 million websites and has been profitable for seven years. Moonfruit has partnered with Edgecast to deliver its tools and sites via a CDN, improving service for North American and Far Eastern users. A recent marketing campaign that trended on Twitter drove a 20% increase in new subscriptions, with customers split roughly 49% UK, 26% USA and 25% elsewhere. Moonfruit competes with Weebly, Yola, Webnode and Jimdo and intends to use new funding to accelerate international customer acquisition through sales and marketing. The company was previously VC-backed, survived the dotcom bust, and was later spun out to pursue renewed growth.
