Moonshoot is building an online gaming platform designed to teach English to children. Its first product, not yet launched, will teach a vocabulary of 600 words and 200 phrases intended to enable children to read up to 50 classic children’s books. The company plans to first release in Japan, where Moonshoot’s president and co‑founder Jay Jamison says nearly 50% of families pay for supplemental English education. Moonshoot has raised a total of $6.6 million in funding led by Alsop Louie Partners and TL Ventures. Tom Kalinske, former CEO and chairman of LeapFrog and former CEO of Sega of America and Mattel, has joined Moonshoot as executive chairman. The startup aims to make English learning fun and engaging by integrating instruction into online games.
