Overview
Moves is a free mobile app that uses the iPhone's accelerometer and location data to track steps, walking, cycling and driving without requiring additional hardware. The app runs in the background and, according to testing in the article, has not noticeably eroded battery life. Its interface resembles a daily journal with spheres showing activity volumes and a vertical timeline of stops and trips. The app sometimes misses several hours of activity and does not detect activities like dance or martial arts. ProtoGeo Oy was co-founded by Sampo Karjalainen, Juho Pennanen and Jukka Partanen, bringing gaming, scientific and Nokia experience to the product. The company has raised $1.6 million from ProFounders and Lifeline Ventures; monetization remains unspecified as Moves is positioned as a proof of concept, with plans to add motivational loops, goal-setting tools and potentially bring similar capabilities to Android if there is demand.
