MPost

Norrsken, Kigali, Rwanda

Overview

MPost provides a mobile app that lets users convert their phone numbers into postal addresses and receive mail on the go, effectively turning phones into virtual post offices. The platform is positioned as an eCommerce solution to boost online businesses in Kenya and across Africa and is credited with reinvigorating the once inactive postal service. Recent funding is intended to scale MPost’s eCommerce capabilities and expand its user reach. The company has announced plans to deploy services more broadly in Kenya and Uganda with partner support. MPost has publicly targeted a $2 million Series A round while having received a $100,000 investment and a prior undisclosed investment. Leadership and investors plan to help link the postal service with other businesses, especially e-commerce and on-demand shopping platforms. MPost is a Nairobi-based startup that uses consumers’ mobile phone numbers to create internationally accepted virtual post office boxes. Founded in 2016 by CEO Abdulaziz (Aziz) Omar and CTO Twahir Mohamed, the solution holds an international patent, is registered with ARIPO, and is ratified and recommended by the Universal Postal Union. The company has rolled out its system in Kenya via a joint venture with the government postal service Posta and is preparing a launch in Uganda after early pilot discussions in multiple African countries (including Botswana). MPost estimates a potential addressable market of 150–200 million customers in the COMESA region. HAVAÍC invested an undisclosed, "not a large" sum in a pre-Series A round to help finalise partnerships and begin roll-outs in new territories. SBC AfriTech introduced MPost to HAVAÍC and its co-founder Zachariah George will join as a strategic adviser. Series A is reported to be progressing with interest from both African and international VCs.
