Mucosis
Groningen, The Netherlands
Overview
Mucosis B.V., based in Groningen, The Netherlands, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company led by CEO Tom Johnston. It uses a proprietary Mimopath® platform to develop needle-free human vaccines that can be delivered intranasally or orally to elicit mucosal and systemic immune responses. Its lead product, SynGEM®, is a stabilized recombinant intranasal vaccine to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and was slated to enter human proof-of-concept studies in 2016. The company intends to use the new funds to progress SynGEM into phase I and IIa human clinical trials. Mucosis is also developing PneuGEM®, a vaccine against pneumococcal disease, and FluGEM®, a vaccine against influenza. Prior to this financing the company had secured €5m from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Mucosis develops novel mucosal vaccines using its Mimopath™ technology, focused on needle-free administration via nose or mouth. Its lead product, FluGEM™, is an influenza vaccine designed for intranasal spray delivery. The company will use the financing to support clinical development of FluGEM™ and to generate proof of efficacy in humans. Mucosis received an innovation credit line of approximately €3m from Agentschap NL, an agency of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The credit line is structured as a loan that will be redeemed only if the FluGEM™ clinical development program is concluded successfully. In December 2007 the company completed a €3m financing led by BioGeneration Ventures with participation from MedSciences Capital, NV NOM and the Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands.
