Multus Biotech develops Proliferum M, a next-generation, low-cost replacement for animal-based growth media such as fetal bovine serum (FBS). The product was developed using the company’s proprietary protein engineering technology and is intended to make cultivated meat more affordable, scalable and profitable. Multus is currently formulating its serum and plans to launch Proliferum M by the end of this year, with production increases targeted in 2022. The company estimates growth factors currently represent 55–95% of marginal costs in cell-based food manufacturing and projects Proliferum M could cost under $1 per litre by 2026 versus about $200 per litre for FBS. Multus is still working to replace remaining animal-derived feed ingredients to reach a fully animal-free formulation.
