Overview
Musixmatch operates the world’s largest lyrics catalogue and supplies lyrical content and enriched metadata across 80+ languages to digital service providers including Amazon Music, Apple Music, Google, Instagram, Spotify, and Tidal. Its content is produced and updated by a global community of more than 20 million curators, a proprietary AI/ML technology stack, over a million verified artists, and in-house quality assurance specialists. The company maintains relationships with more than 100,000 music publishers and supports millions of songs in its catalogue. Musixmatch’s product set includes lyrics, metadata, tooling, and services for DSPs and other partners, and it plans to expand offerings internationally and into new verticals. The company was founded in 2010 and today has more than 120 employees across Italy and Europe. MusiXmatch provides a mobile app that matches users' music libraries with song lyrics and offers an Official Lyrics API for third parties to access its catalog. The service features more than 7 million lyrics in 38 languages and is used by more than 20 million users. The company holds worldwide agreements with major publishers including Sony/ATV, Warner Chappell, Universal Music Publishing Group, EMI Publishing, BMG Rights and others. MusiXmatch was founded in 2010 and operates offices in Bologna, London and New York, employing 24 people and continuing to hire. The product and licensing relationships underpin both consumer usage and B2B API licensing revenues as the company expands distribution and integrations. MusiXmatch operates a licensed lyrics database and companion apps that sync lyrics to the music users are listening to across iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Mac, Windows 8 and Spotify. Its apps have passed 10 million downloads, adding about 1 million downloads per month, and generate more than 40 million sessions per month; December set a record of almost 400 million screen views. The company reports the majority of users are in the U.S. (~40% of traffic) with Asia (including South Korea and Japan) accounting for ~30%; it is the No. 2 app on Spotify with over 1.5 million hours of lyrics-synced music streamed in December. Revenue is growing but not disclosed; current monetization includes advertising and licensing access to its API, with planned premium features such as offline lyrics caching, ad removal, cross-device syncing and virtual goods. The company plans to scale the product and increase headcount (currently 20 engineers) while expanding into new offices and localization for New York, Japan and Korea. Leadership sees a move from an app to a service, including second-screen and TV integrations to mirror mobile-synced lyrics to television. musiXmatch is a European music startup that has built a licensed, searchable database of song lyrics and accompanying music metadata and exposes that content through an API. Founded in 2010, the company has collected 5.3 million songs to date. Its API supports search via unstructured queries or open identifiers, provides search-engine‑friendly lyric displays, artist biographies and images, and full discographies with release dates, tracks and cover art; it is available in 18 languages. musiXmatch works with songwriters and music publishers on lyric distribution and monetization, offering usage reports, country-by-country rights management and a revenue-sharing model. The platform’s music‑matching algorithms let users access lyrics from music services and personal libraries, and the company has partnerships with BMG, Kobalt, Universal Music Publishing Group, Sony ATV Music and the Harry Fox Agency. musiXmatch recently raised new funding and plans to use proceeds to add strategic partnerships and expand across the U.S., Europe and Asia. MusiXmatch builds a "lyrics in the cloud" platform that aims to create the most extensive legal lyrics database and serve lyrics to other sites via cloud APIs. The company keeps its system open so third parties can plug data into MusiXmatch’s metadata platform while MusiXmatch tracks, clears and monetizes each lyric view. The database already counts more than 4 million matched lyrics and the company says it is closing deals worldwide with music majors to secure rights. Its distribution model is API-based and the business model is ad-driven with revenue sharing. MusiXmatch has announced €400k of new seed funding and previously raised €150k from a former Dada executive. The new capital will be used to further develop the product and the company says a Series A is in negotiation.
