MyCadbox, from Finland’s CadFaster, offers native Windows and iPad apps (backed by cloud storage) to upload, download and view large 3D CAD models at higher frame rates than browser-based tools. The product has been in public beta since March and grew out of an earlier offering called QuickStep. MyCadbox operates a freemium model with a Pro tier priced at $9.99 per month and a team-focused version planned for release in the summer. The company emphasizes native DirectX and OpenGL ES technologies to handle much larger models than WebGL/browser solutions. Longer-term plans include building Evernote-style search and metadata indexing by using a flexible database format to enable reuse of CAD information and document-management features for larger teams. The startup positions itself to improve collaboration and speed up design processes for distributed stakeholders.
