Overview
MySocialCloud is a startup that combines bookmarking, social stream consolidation, filtering and password-storage/auto-login capabilities to help users organize their online lives. The service hooks into Facebook and Twitter to surface friends' shared content, lets users bookmark items (via a "Cloud It" bookmark) and store associated usernames and passwords. Passwords are stored encrypted and can only be decrypted by the user; all communication uses 256-bit SSL and each user's data is encrypted uniquely to limit exposure in a breach. The team began building the product in May 2011 and, until now, the service has been available to users at a handful of colleges in California while remaining in private beta. TechCrunch notes the user interface needs polish (streams require manual refreshes and some informational pop-ups are awkward) and that the product faces competition from News.me, Zite and Flipboard. The company has raised just shy of $1 million from high-profile backers and is offering TechCrunch readers a beta access code, indicating steps to broaden access beyond the initial college users.
