Overview
MyTown, part of Booyah’s real-world gaming network, is a location-based service that enables users to check in to places and products and recently added barcode scanning for product check-ins. It is the first location-based service to support global check-ins through Google’s Places via the Google Maps API. The company has expanded internationally to the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada and plans further global rollout. MyTown reports more than 2.8 million users in the United States. The app is available for iPhone and iPad. CEO Keith Lee framed the launches as the beginning of bringing real-world gaming to players worldwide. MyTown is an iPhone location-based game that emphasizes gaming mechanics—players buy virtual properties with in-game currency and earn rent when others visit. The app blends real-world locations and virtual property ownership, with rents fluctuating based on actual property popularity. MyTown is developed by Booyah, whose co-founders Keith Lee, Brian Morrisroe and Sam Christiansen previously worked on Blizzard's Diablo and World of Warcraft franchises. Usage grew rapidly: the service reported about 500,000 users, 31 million check-ins, 2.1 million unique locations created, and roughly six check-ins per second. Apple featured the app for two weeks after launch and it reached the seventh most popular free app, helping drive viral growth. Booyah planned to release MyTown 2.0 imminently and has been financed by Kleiner Perkins' iFund plus a second $5 million financing, bringing total funding to just under $10 million.
