Nanoleaf is a Toronto-based cleantech startup developing the Smarter Series of highly efficient, intelligent lighting products. The company will use funding from the Government of Canada to continue development of its Smarter Series and sustain product R&D. Its Apple HomeKit-enabled Smarter Kit allows users to control lights with their voice and previously received retail support from Best Buy while the product was crowdfunding. The Smarter Kit includes a uniquely designed dodecahedron light bulb that uses multiple small light sources to create a uniform output without secondary optics. The bulb’s black PCB exterior enables it to produce the same amount of light as a 60-watt bulb while consuming only 7.5 watts. CEO and co-founder Gimmy Chu said the federal support will help maintain the company’s pace of product development and further its positive impact on the planet and people.
