Overview
NanoPhotonica develops electroluminescent quantum dot light emitting diode (EL-QLED) device technology intended for next-generation electronic displays such as HDTVs, smartphones, tablets and notebooks. Its EL-QLED approach aims to deliver superior brightness, resolution, thinness (including flexible/foldable form factors), wider viewing angles and lower power consumption versus current LCD, OLED and QD overlay approaches. Led by CEO Chris Morton, the company is finalizing development of its devices and preparing to enter commercialization. NanoPhotonica plans to use new funding to hire additional engineering staff to accelerate development and commercialization. The company is based in Lake Mary, Fla. Financially, it has secured $3.5M in funding to support these efforts. NanoPhotonica develops patented nanomaterials and processes intended to produce energy-efficient, long-lasting displays with superior brightness and color purity, and lightweight, lower-cost solar power cells. Its products are based on technology licensed from the University of Florida and target consumer electronics such as cell phones, tablets and TVs as well as solar applications. The company says its materials require far lower production costs and can increase usable lifetime of solar cells, making solar more competitive with fossil fuels. NanoPhotonica is working with major display manufacturers and planned to begin shipping product in 2012. The company finalized a funding agreement with the Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research to help bridge early-stage funding gaps and attract additional capital from angels, venture capital firms and others. Management states the funding will accelerate product commercialization with major customers and support creation of high-paying jobs in Florida.
