Overview

NarrativeDx is an Austin, Texas–based company that uses artificial intelligence to analyze patient comments, grievances and online reviews and returns actionable insights to hospitals in the form of charts and graphs. The company holds a U.S. patent covering automated analysis of patient feedback. It is adding a product line focused on physician and nurse feedback to help reduce employee burnout and turnover; that tool is live at pilot clinics. NarrativeDx intends to use new funding to boost sales and marketing, continue product innovation and hire additional talent. The startup has raised $7.1 million to date, including earlier funding rounds in 2016 and 2017. The company was founded by Kyle Robertson and Senem Guney. NarrativeDx builds a patient-experience analytics tool that applies natural language processing to add context to patient satisfaction surveys and free-text comments. The company says it developed an adaptive rounding tool that generates real-time, facility-specific questions for patients. CEO and co-founder Kyle Robertson told MedCity News the business has been "growing rapidly" over the past year and recently added clients including Christiana Care Health System and Stanford Children’s Hospital. NarrativeDx participated in the Dreamit Health accelerator in 2014 and has previously secured investment from Dreamit and Live Oak Venture Partners. Last year it raised a $500,000 seed round co-led by Austin-based Capital Factory and Silverstone Partners. The company intends to use the new funding to add sales staff as part of its expansion of patient experience analytics offerings. NarrativeDx is a patient-feedback startup that has run pilots with Penn Medicine and Independence Blue Cross and serves customers in New York and Texas. The three-person founding team includes cofounders Senem Guney and Kyle Robertson; Guney holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. The company graduated DreamIt Health and participated in the Philly Startup Leaders Accelerator, and Guney was named an Alliance of Women Entrepreneurs fellow. NarrativeDx recently closed a $650,000 financing round structured as convertible debt and plans to use the proceeds to grow the team. The startup relocated from Philadelphia to Austin in May at the request of its investors. The founders also gained attention at SXSW—finalists in an Impact Pediatric Health pitch competition—where they pitched to Mark Cuban, which helped attract additional funding.
