Nat4bio produces an edible thin-film coating made from two main compounds obtained via microbial fermentation of native, non-GMO strains; the primary compound is a glucose-based polymer combined with small amounts of food-grade excipients to tune viscosity, adherence and elasticity. The coating protects produce from microbes and limits gas exchange to slow ripening, with current demonstrations focused on citrus and plans to prototype formulas for avocados and berries. The company is targeting produce grown in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Peru and potentially Mexico. Nat4bio is early-stage and small, with four full-time staff; its founders met through the Argentina-based Green Exponential incubator and the company participated in SOSV’s IndieBio program. The startup has raised a $750,000 pre-seed round to date and is showing its citrus coating at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield.
