Overview
Groupon India operates a local daily-deals and local commerce platform focused on local services and offers. The business was formed out of Groupon’s January 2011 acquisition of India’s SoSasta (briefly rebranded as Crazeal before regaining the Groupon brand). Management has struggled with decentralized operations and platform fragmentation following rapid international expansion and acquisitions, which has limited growth. Groupon India has not been a blockbuster for its parent and India is not broken out separately in Groupon’s public financials. Groupon’s broader “rest of world” segment accounted for $101 million of $925 million in company revenues in the most recent earnings, and excluding Ticket Monster that segment was near break-even in the quarter. E-commerce in India is highly competitive, with players like Snapdeal and Flipkart raising large sums; Groupon India plans to emphasize local commerce as a differentiated position. The company is aiming for greater autonomy from its U.S. parent and plans additional outside funding rounds to support growth.
