Nebula builds an on‑premise private cloud system that lets businesses assemble massive private computing clouds from hundreds or thousands of inexpensive servers. The company is operating a private beta (which began in March) with customers in biotech, financial services and media. Nebula has assembled a team of more than 50 engineers, including four OpenStack project technical leads and engineers responsible for a large percentage of OpenStack code. The new funding will be used to expand the beta program, grow product and engineering teams, build a petascale test system, and accelerate product development and testing. Nebula is privately held and venture‑funded by a group of strategic and institutional investors named in the round. Chris C. Kemp, former NASA CTO and an OpenStack co‑founder, is CEO and co‑founder of the company. Nebula builds a hardware appliance that allows businesses to create massive private clouds from hundreds or thousands of inexpensive commodity servers using OpenStack. The company launched in July 2011 and was founded by CEO Chris C. Kemp, VP Business Development Steve O’Hara and Devin Carlen. It was seeded by Andy Bechtolsheim, David Cheriton and Ram Shriram. After securing venture financing from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Highland Capital Partners, Nebula is expanding its teams in Palo Alto and Seattle. The company appointed Jose Guardado as director of recruiting; he joins from Google. Nebula intends to grow to fifty engineers, scientists and executives in the next year and has recently hired Tres Henry, Daniel Ford and Matt Gambardella.
