Nebula Genomics

73 Sumner St Apt 401, San Francisco, CA, 94103, United States

Overview

Nebula Genomics is creating a decentralized genomic and health-data marketplace that uses blockchain and smart contracts to give consumers control over who accesses their genome and to compensate them for data use. The company has partnered with Veritas Genetics to connect the Nebula marketplace to Veritas’ Arvados open-source platform for storing, sharing and analyzing genomic data. Arvados is used globally by researchers and currently exceeds 20 petabytes of data, and Nebula plans to leverage its federated architecture to allow consented data to be queried regardless of physical location. Nebula intends for data buyers to subsidize sequencing and interpretation costs, creating incentives for consumer participation and accelerating research. The company emphasizes privacy, security and a token-based payment system to address consumer concerns about centralized data brokers. Nebula was founded in 2017 by George Church, Dennis Grishin and Kamal Obbad and operates from offices in San Francisco and Boston.
