Overview
NeoCarbon develops technology to remove CO2 cost-efficiently from ambient air by leveraging waste heat streams from existing industrial sites. Led by CEO René Haas and founded in January 2022 in Berlin, the company implemented a fully autonomous demonstrator in Spring 2023. It is finalizing rollouts of a second-generation system to a customer's site by Q1 2024. The company intends to use the new funding to accelerate deployment and the development of its first full-scale unit. NeoCarbon raised €3.2M in Seed funding to support these efforts. Its approach integrates with existing industrial infrastructure to lower the cost of direct-air CO2 removal. NeoCarbon builds retrofit DAC kits designed to be installed inside working industrial cooling towers to capture CO2 from the large airflows those towers process. The startup’s current hardware is moving from a lab proof of concept toward an MVP and a pilot prototype intended for testing in a commercial facility early next year. It says its sweet spot in the near term is cooling towers with 1–10 megawatts of cooling power, which it estimates represent thousands of tonnes of capture potential per year. NeoCarbon argues retrofitting existing towers can cut DAC implementation costs by up to 10x and enable faster, lower‑cost scaling. In the short term the company aims to site projects where captured CO2 can be reused onsite (e.g., vertical farms, beverage makers), and longer term it is pursuing storage partnerships for permanent sequestration. The team plans to scale via licensing to cooling tower manufacturers and to expand its engineering group to get the MVP ready for pilot deployment.
