Neustark ag

Freiburgstrasse 251, Bern, 3018, Switzerland

Overview

Neustark has developed an IP‑protected solution that captures biogenic CO2 from biogas plants, liquefies and transports it to construction‑waste recycling sites, and injects it into concrete granulates and other mineral waste to trigger accelerated mineralization and permanent storage. The carbonated recycled aggregate can be used to build roads or produce fresh recycled building materials; Neustark says the mineralization stores CO2 for hundreds of thousands of years. The company has deployed its solution at 19 sites and has 40 additional plants under construction across Europe. Neustark has sold nearly 120,000 tons of carbon removal to date and certifies projects under the Gold Standard. The company is scaling globally with plans to expand across Europe, enter North America and Asia‑Pacific, and aims to permanently remove 1 million tons of CO2 by 2030. Founded in 2019 and based in Berne, Switzerland, Neustark is a team of around 60 people (Q2 2024). Neustark is a Bern‑based company that captures CO2 at biogas plants, liquefies it and enables permanent storage — including enrichment of demolition‑concrete granulate and geological storage abroad. The firm manages the full value chain from capture and liquefaction to transport (rail, ship, truck), storage in target countries (e.g., Iceland, Norway) and third‑party certification of climate benefit. Its core product is a CO2 removal service for point sources, with processes to incorporate CO2 into building materials or store it underground. The company was awarded two projects by the Stiftung Klimarappen and will use the funding to scale its core activities and to explore expanded geological storage pathways. Co‑CEOs and founders Valentin Gutknecht and Johannes Tiefenthaler are quoted on accelerating scaling and unlocking geological storage potential. Operational metrics disclosed in the press release include contracted removal volumes of 16,500 t CO2 (concrete storage) and 13,000 t CO2 (geological storage), totaling 29,500 t of sold CO2.
