New Origin is an Enschede-based spin-out from the University of Twente’s MESA+ NanoLab developing an independent photonic chips foundry. The foundry will produce silicon nitride chips and aims to lower the cost and complexity of producing chips so more companies can experiment with or integrate photonics. The company has secured €6 million in funding from PhotonDelta to finance the build. That funding is part of a contribution the Province of Overijssel made available to PhotonDelta for a national photonics programme. PhotonDelta is a Netherlands-based ecosystem that researches, designs, develops, and manufactures photonic chip technology and last year secured €1.1 billion in public and private investment to scale up production, build startups, create applications, and develop infrastructure and talent. Supporters say New Origin’s foundry will boost the regional ChipTech Twente cluster, help meet existing demand for chips, and inform the creation of large-scale production facilities to strengthen Europe’s photonics industry.
