Overview
Nexmo provides telco APIs for SMS and voice, selling primarily to larger enterprises rather than directly to developers. The company said its growth has been driven by the expansion of the OTT market where a few players generate massive volume. Nexmo planned to deploy new capital into marketing and to expand its sales team, explicitly targeting enterprise customers. CEO Tony Jamous reported revenue grew 350% from 2012 to 2013 and said the company was generating revenue at a roughly $50 million annual run rate. Nexmo forecasted about 100% year‑over‑year revenue growth in 2014, which would push its run rate toward $100 million; the article also noted aggregate revenue of around $40 million for the year. The company had been run relatively lean (staff rose from 30 to 40 in late 2013) and expected hires of about five per month in the first half of 2014 (a ~75% staff increase by mid‑2014). Nexmo offers a carrier-grade mobile messaging API that streamlines the layers between telcos and developers by connecting directly to operators. Its pay-per-use service reaches about 5 billion people and is used by companies such as Airbnb and Pfizer; Tropo is also a Nexmo client. The platform delivers messages to mobile displays independent of SMS and the company plans to launch additional APIs, including text-to-speech. Nexmo positions itself as a wholesaler similar to Twilio but differentiates by going direct to telcos rather than working through vendors. The company operates offices in London and San Francisco and plans to open offices in Madrid and Singapore. At the time of reporting it had 20 employees and expected to grow to 35 by year-end.
