Overview

NGenTec develops a novel direct-drive permanent-magnet generator for use in large wind turbines. The company was formed at the University of Edinburgh and was founded in 2009 by Dr Markus Mueller and Dr Alasdair McDonald. It aims to supply its generators to the renewable energy sector and to bring multi‑MW products to the offshore market by 2013. NGenTec recently signed an industrial partnership with gearing company David Brown, which will provide manufacturing expertise and testing for the first 1MW prototype in return for an equity stake. Financially, the company raised £200,000 from Old College Capital (a funding initiative launched by the University of Edinburgh) and recently received a £4m investment from a Dutch venture capital fund and Scottish Enterprise’s Scottish Co‑investment Fund.
