NileGuide is a San Francisco travel startup that combines tips written by paid local experts with automatically generated recommendations for restaurants, hotels, and other points of interest based on users' personal preferences. Users can print customized guides or plan trips using the NileGuide iPhone app. The company says it now includes 100,000 points of interest across more than 250 destinations and has 130 local editors. In May NileGuide acquired travel Q&A site Localyte and used it to launch an Ask Locals service that the company says has 100,000 experts ready to answer questions. CEO Josh Steinitz said the company is now super‑focused on travel recommendations, leveraging both professional and community local expertise. Financially, NileGuide has raised new funding and has previously accumulated $13 million in total capital from investors named in filings. Nile Guide is a travel planning site that launched just over a month ago. Since launch it has added support for Istanbul, Vienna, Sedona, New Orleans, and Cusco, and its homepage now lets users select destinations from a list. The site also suggests particular neighborhoods to check out within destinations. Planned updates include Internet Explorer 6 support on July 1 and additional destination support for Moscow, Shanghai, Vail, Calgary/Canadian Rockies, and Costa Rica; there is no word yet on Safari support. Nile Guide raised $8 million in a Series B from Austin Ventures, Lehman Brothers, and existing investors Draper Richards and KPG Ventures. The Series B brings the company's total funding to over $9.5 million.
