Overview

Nirvanix provides a fully-managed enterprise cloud storage service that stores, delivers, and processes large unstructured content across public, hybrid, and private cloud deployments. The platform is architected for millions of users, billions of files and exabytes of data, targeting very large datasets rather than consumer-grade storage. Key features include a geo-diverse namespace that makes uploaded data available across all data centers and autonomous cross-site data recovery with continuous integrity checks and background repair. Customers include NBCUniversal (which stores 3 petabytes with Nirvanix), Cerner, IBM, USC Digital Repository, National Geographic and Relativity Media; Nirvanix also built a replica of its Cloud Storage Network for IBM’s SmartCloud Enterprise. Management reported strong recent momentum, booking more revenue in Q1 2012 than nearly all of 2011 and securing more petabytes under management over the past year than in the prior three years combined. The company plans to use new funding to expand engineering staff, open a cloud competency center in Colorado, increase its data-center footprint by six from its current nine, and boost sales and marketing. Nirvanix offers a fully managed Storage Delivery Network (SDN) that intelligently stores, delivers, and processes storage requests in the best network location. The SDN is positioned as an alternative to Amazon's S3. The company says the appointment of Scott Genereux as President and CEO and the new funding should help expand market penetration of its SDN on a global scale. Genereux was formerly SVP of Worldwide Sales and Marketing at QLogic and held executive roles at DataDirect Networks and Hitachi. Jim Zierick will continue to serve on Nirvanix's Advisory Council. Nirvanix secured an additional $10 million in capital, bringing its total capital raised to $45 million. The new investment comes from Intel Capital, Mission Ventures, Valhalla Partners, and Windward Ventures. Nirvanix offers an online storage service positioned as easier to integrate than Amazon S3 and provides a 99.9% uptime SLA. The company operates a Storage Delivery Network optimized for media applications. It says recent investment will be used to further technology advancements of that network. Nirvanix plans to accelerate a global build-out of storage nodes to meet swelling demand for its service. Financially, Intel Capital has taken a stake in the company (size undisclosed). Earlier in the year Nirvanix closed a $12 million financing round that included Mission Ventures, Valhalla Partners and Windward Ventures. Nirvanix launched as a San Diego-based alternative to Amazon’s S3 cloud storage service. Its core product is an object storage service positioned as easier to integrate than S3 and backed by a service level agreement guaranteeing 99/9% uptime. Pricing is $0.18/GB/month for storage and $0.18/GB for data transferred. The article compares Nirvanix pricing to Amazon’s $0.15/GB/month storage and $0.10/GB in / $0.13–$0.18/GB out transfer charges. The company has raised $12 million in funding. Nirvanix’s affiliation with MediaMax, which recently went through a problematic transition that left customers offline, is noted as a potential marketing and trust risk as it rolls out the new service.
