Nium, founded last year in Cambridge, England, is building a "Green Ammonia on Demand" system that uses low-temperature, low-pressure synthesis to produce ammonia onsite. The company’s first devices—small-scale, low-energy reactors called "minions"—are designed to deliver ammonia at lower cost and with a smaller carbon footprint than Haber-Bosch. Nium plans to place these reactors onsite with hydrogen producers so hydrogen can be extracted from ammonia as needed, addressing storage and transport challenges. The seed funding will be used to assemble the initial minions and accelerate deployment with hydrogen providers. Longer term, Nium aims to decentralize ammonia production for farms, pairing solar and wind-powered hydrogen generation with its reactors to create self-sustaining fuel and fertilizer systems. CEO Lewis Jenkins and the team position the technology as a route to eliminate the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process and cut ammonia-related CO2 emissions.
