Normal makes customized, high-end earphones that are 3D-printed to the exact shape of a customer's ear and sold for $199. Customers use the Normal iOS/Android app to photograph their ears (with a coin for scale), pick cord length and colors, and receive personalized earbuds within about 48 hours. The company operates a manufacturing facility and storefront in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood and uses Stratasys Fortus 250mc printers to produce the earforms, while sourcing top-tier audio components from undisclosed suppliers. Founder Nikki Kaufman, a former Quirky executive, began developing the business plan within months of the idea and planned to open the storefront about a year after inception. Normal positions the custom fit as an audio and comfort differentiator and says the earphones are just the first product, with additional products in development. The company reported having $5 million in the bank from a mix of venture capital firms and angel investors.
