Overview

Notional Finance operates a fully decentralized protocol on Ethereum that offers fixed interest rate borrowing and lending. Led by CEO and co-founder Teddy Woodward, the protocol launched in mid-January 2021. In the three months since launch it has attracted more than $17M in total value locked (TVL) and executed $9.5M in loans. Users have been borrowing against crypto to invest in businesses, purchase land, and replace traditional mortgages by acting as their own lender. The company is based in New York, NY. Notional plans to use new funding to hire finance and technology experts and to build new products. Notional provides fixed-rate lending and borrowing on Ethereum via a new on-chain automated market maker that mints tradable fCash tokens representing future‑dated assets. fCash can be redeemed at maturity for an associated currency (currently representing future DAI), so trading between DAI and fDAI implies a fixed interest rate over the period. The platform launched in beta after roughly 10 months in stealth and is positioned for DeFi, CeFi and institutional traders seeking predictable rates. Co‑founder Teddy Woodward described the product as a way for users to take advantage of volatility rather than be hurt by it. Notional announced a $1.3 million funding round from eight investors, including Coinbase Ventures, 1confirmation and Polychain. Investor Nick Tomaino of 1confirmation said they are excited about bringing fixed‑rate loans to Ethereum’s variable‑rate lending environment.
