Overview

NovaBiotics is an Aberdeen-based clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on first-in-class therapies for difficult-to-treat infectious diseases and respiratory conditions including cystic fibrosis and COVID-19. Its lead therapy, Nylexa, is described as a dual-action treatment that targets both SARS-CoV-2 infection and the hyperinflammation that drives severe COVID-19, and also has activity against secondary bacterial lung infections. The active ingredient for Nylexa is reported to be readily available, cost-effective, scalable and has been used in medicines for over 30 years. Because Nylexa is a repurposed therapy with an established safety profile, the company states it can proceed directly into phase 2 clinical studies and may follow a fast-track regulatory pathway. Nylexa is under consideration for inclusion in two global platform trials. The company says the programme aims for near-term, large-scale use by healthcare systems pending successful clinical development. NovaBiotics is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on the design and development of first-in-class anti-infectives for difficult-to-treat, medically unmet diseases. Its pipeline includes clinical-stage antimicrobials derived from a proprietary anti-infective peptide platform and a "mini biologic" antibacterial-mucolytic (Lynovex®). Lead product NP213 (Novexatin®) is being developed as a topical treatment for fungal nail infections and is in clinical trials with co-development partner Taro Pharmaceuticals. NM001 (Lynovex®) is being developed as an orphan drug for cystic fibrosis, is in a Phase II oral trial, and is being formulated for inhalation for longer-term chronic delivery. Preclinical candidates include NP339 (Novamycin®), an antifungal peptide, and NP432 (Novarifyn®), a peptide antibacterial targeting multi-drug resistant bacteria. The company recently secured funding to provide working capital to drive its clinical-stage programs and further develop earlier-stage antifungal and antibacterial compounds.
