NovaResp Technologies

54-1344 Summer St, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3H 0A8, Canada

Overview

NovaResp develops an artificial intelligence system designed to be compatible with any CPAP machine to predict sleep apnea events and add air pressure proactively rather than reactively. The technology aims to permit lower intervention pressures, improving patient comfort and potentially enabling smaller, lower‑power PAP devices. NovaResp says the system can collect richer user data for analytics and personalized therapy, which it expects will improve adherence and health outcomes. The company is pursuing regulatory approval and commercialization in 2024. NovaResp was founded in 2016 by Dalhousie University biomedical engineer Hamed Hanafi and originally considered manufacturing a physical device but found the algorithm could work without modifying machines. Management has said it may later commercialize its own CPAP machine and explore applications in non‑invasive ventilators and anesthesia machines. NovaResp develops technology to treat sleep apnea and is based in Halifax. The company is advancing its product through clinical trials, and CEO Hamed Hanafi expects the new funding to carry it through completion of those trials. NovaResp raised a $3 million seed extension round to support that work. This extension builds on a $2 million round the company closed in December 2022. The seed extension was led by board member Dr. Neil Smith and included returning investors Concrete Ventures and Invest Nova Scotia.
