Overview

Novelda develops smart sensor technology centered on its XeThru radar System-on-Chip, using low-power UWB impulse radar to enable non-intrusive contactless sensing. The radar SoC underpins sensors for consumer electronics, smart buildings, vital‑sign monitoring and human safety applications. XeThru sensors use extremely low‑energy GHz radio waves and advanced signal processing, making them suitable for a range of commercial applications. The company is led by CEO Cornelia Mender and maintains offices in Oslo, the U.S. and Hong Kong. Novelda intends to use the new funding to further develop and scale the XeThru radar sensor technology into high‑volume applications. Novelda develops and manufactures XeThru sensors and an X2 system-on-chip (SoC) that detect movement and human vital signs such as breathing and heart rate from several meters, and can sense through clothing, bedding, glass and walls. The sensors operate using harmless, extremely low-energy high-frequency (GHz) radio waves and advanced digital signal processing that allows multiple sensors to operate in the same room without interference. XeThru supports detection of proximity, gestures, speed, presence and advanced tracking for commercial and industrial use. Novelda plans to offer the technology both as prebuilt sensors (with or without firmware) and as an SoC for fully customized solutions, and will distribute development kits and OEM modules to system developers. The company is promoting an X2 Inspiration Kit (preprogrammed movement sensor, sensor modules, software and MATLAB examples) that was scheduled for customer availability in January 2015. Financially, Novelda closed a $12M Series A to secure delivery and further development of its XeThru technology, led by Investinor with additional participation from other investors.
