Nutanix

1740 Technology Drive, Suite 150, San Jose, California, 95110, United States

Overview

Nutanix sells converged infrastructure hardware and software that brings storage intelligence into servers and combines it with compute to create an app-centric data-center infrastructure. The company claims its solution can compress multiple traditional boxes into far fewer units, yielding 20–50% cost savings depending on workloads and prior provisioning. Nutanix has been operating for five years and selling product for three, employs around 650 people, and serves about 800 customers across 43 countries. Last year, roughly 40% of bookings came from international customers. Management says the company will use fresh capital to expand markets, open offices, hire personnel, and broaden product offerings, though it does not plan to spend all proceeds immediately. The CFO framed large fundraising as a way to build relationships with public investors and as a precursor to an eventual IPO. Nutanix develops software that manages flash storage and packages it into commodity x86 servers to create converged, app-centric infrastructure. Its product reduces the space and complexity of SAN/NAS deployments while delivering higher performance for large data loads. The company positions itself as a bridge between public and private cloud, aiming to deliver web-scale architecture for mainstream customers. Nutanix says it will broaden its technology stack, including investing in deeper analytics capabilities. After the latest round the company is valued at about $1 billion and has raised $172.2 million in total. It faces competition from incumbents such as Dell, IBM and EMC and plans to use funding to aggressively expand and defend against commoditization of servers. Nutanix develops software-defined storage that integrates storage into commodity x86 servers to support highly virtualized, converged data-center environments. Its approach aims to reduce reliance on SAN and NAS by packaging compute, networking and storage into the same appliance. The company has sold 150 systems and deployed 600 servers with more than 3.3 petabytes of storage. Nutanix systems integrate Fusion-io server-attached flash storage. The company plans to use recent funding to build out a direct sales and marketing channel network rather than sell through OEMs, a strategy its CEO likened to taking an 'Apple route.' Nutanix faces competition from large incumbents such as IBM and EMC and is positioning itself for a potential IPO. Nutanix builds a converged hardware and software solution that combines compute and storage into a single building block for scaling out virtualized datacenters. Its flagship product, Nutanix Complete Cluster, launched in August 2011 and is a high-performance hardware and software solution. The Complete Cluster converges compute and storage to eliminate the need for separate networked storage and is available through certified solution partners. Nutanix was founded in 2009 by CEO Dheeraj Pandey, CTO Mohit Aron and CPO Ajeet Singh and is based in San Jose, California. The company raised $25m in a Series B funding round. In conjunction with the funding, Shirish Sathaye of Khosla Ventures and Mark Leslie joined Nutanix's board; existing investors Lightspeed Venture Partners and Blumberg Capital participated. Nutanix offers converged virtual-storage appliances that leverage server-attached SSDs and hard disks to let organizations run virtual machines without complex SAN or NAS infrastructure. Its scale-out, "Google-like" architecture brings compute and storage into a single tier, which the company says shrinks data-center footprint and reduces capital and administration costs. All products are designed specifically for virtual servers and virtual desktops. Nutanix intends to target the roughly $20 billion market building private clouds for server and desktop virtualization and service providers building public clouds. The company was founded in 2009 and is based in Santa Clara. It announced initial institutional funding of $13.2 million.
