Overview
Nutrinia is a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing a proprietary oral formulation of insulin for gastrointestinal indications in infants, specifically intestinal malabsorption in preterm newborns and Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS) in infants. Its oral insulin is locally acting, stable at room temperature, rapidly dissolves into saline, formula or breast milk, and is designed for administration via enteral feeding tubing or orally. The company reports efficacy and safety in animal studies and multiple human clinical trials and notes there are no approved therapies for these orphan indications. Nutrinia recently closed a $30 million Series D financing to fund clinical development. Proceeds will be used to initiate two pivotal registration trials in separate indications related to acceleration of gut maturation and adaptation. The trials will target preterm newborns born between 26 and 32 weeks' gestational age and infants with SBS under 12 months, and are planned in the US and Europe. Nutrinia is headquartered in Ramat-Gan, Israel, with US operations based in Morristown, NJ. Nutrinia develops formulated oral insulin designed to promote gut maturation and treat rare gastrointestinal disorders in babies. The company is focused on two dual orphan drug indications: premature infants and short bowel disease. Its lead programs are NTRA-2112 (for pre-term infants) and NTRA-9620 (for Short Bowel Syndrome). Nutrinia plans to advance multinational clinical studies to support registration of both programs in the EU and the United States. The company was founded by Professor Naim Shehade in the NGT incubator in Nazareth and is led by CEO Miki Olshansky. It is based in Ramat-Gan, Israel.
