Odin Space is building ultra-compact "Nano Sensors" that detect orbital debris smaller than one centimeter—objects too small for traditional tracking systems yet still capable of damaging spacecraft. The company proved the concept in 2023 when its first sensor flew aboard D-Orbit’s ION transfer vehicle and successfully recorded debris impacts. Since then, Odin has been shrinking the hardware and integrating it for easy installation on satellite buses, with the first commercial sensors slated to launch in 2026. Data from a distributed network of these sensors will be used to create debris maps that guide customers toward safer orbital slots, akin to a space-weather forecast. Odin is also collaborating with Lloyd’s of London and other partners to develop specialized insurance products that price and insure the risk of debris strikes, leveraging the attribution data provided by its sensors. Initial target customers are commercial low-Earth-orbit satellite manufacturers and operators, with longer-term plans to serve military users who need to diagnose anomalies caused by external debris. The company, founded in 2020 by former NASA debris scientist James New and finance executive Dan Terrett, is currently expanding its sales and marketing team using proceeds from its recent seed round.
