Overview
FloDesign, founded in 1990, is applying its aerospace and jet‑propulsion expertise to design and manufacture shrouded, jet‑engine‑like wind turbines. The company says its design is three to four times more efficient than traditional open‑fan turbines by forcing air through a small opening and using double rings of turning blades. FloDesign argues that smaller blades and shorter towers will reduce material use and lower the costs of building large wind farms. It remains in stealth and is in the research and development phase. The company has raised $34.5 million to make the design a reality. Prior to this financing, FloDesign received an $8.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA‑E program. FloDesign says it may license the technology to large wind‑power contractors in the future.
