OKKO Health develops eye-health self-monitoring apps focused on macular degeneration. Its core product is an interactive smartphone game played regularly to inform clinicians and patients of changes in visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, distortion and colour vision. The company intends to build aggregate datasets and deploy machine-learning algorithms to better target treatments for macular degeneration. OKKO was founded by Dr Stephanie Campbell in 2018 and is based in Bristol. The app was co-developed with support from Innovate UK and The Macular Society, has undergone beta testing and is being piloted by several clinical partners in the UK. The company says the new funding will support its launch in Germany and development of dataset and AI capabilities. OKKO develops smartphone-based remote vision-monitoring software to assess eye conditions, including amblyopia (lazy eye). Its approach uses gamified activities played on parents' phones and sensors in modern smartphones to collect data such as reaction time and proximity and to track vision over time. The app pairs with a secure web-based clinical portal through which eye care professionals can access readings and identify patients who need in-person appointments. OKKO launched its remote vision monitoring software in May 2020 and has an iPhone app aimed at adults that has met the necessary standards to be a CE-marked medical device. OKKO Health is certified by British Standards for the development and manufacture of vision monitoring software. The company plans to use recent grant funding to accelerate development and the launch of a pediatric smartphone app.
