Overview

OLX is a Buenos Aires-based online classifieds company that competes with Craigslist and has a strong international footprint. The free classifieds site reports over 125 million unique visitors per month and operates in 90 countries in 40 languages. While it has had trouble competing with Craigslist in the U.S., OLX is the current leader in Latin America and Asia. The company has expanded via acquisitions and partnerships, acquiring Mundoanuncio.com in 2006, investing in Edeng.cn in 2007, and securing white‑label deals with Friendster in the Philippines and with hi5. Financially, prior to the Naspers deal OLX had raised nearly $30 million; Naspers made a strategic investment and bought out prior investors. Naspers’ backing aligns with plans to build core internet communities and then expand services into e-commerce, communication, social networking, content and gaming in target regions. OLX operates a free classifieds site positioning itself as a global alternative to Craigslist, with Web 2.0 features such as social widgets, improved search, interactive maps, and mobile functionality. The site has a presence in more than 87 countries and is offered in 39 languages, with particular popularity in Spain, India, Portugal, Mexico, South America, China, and the Philippines. OLX attributes part of its success in the Philippines to a white‑label partnership with Friendster and has made investments and acquisitions such as Edeng.cn and Mundoanuncio.com. The company reports roughly 125 employees across offices in New York, Buenos Aires, Beijing, and Moscow and added almost 35 employees since the prior year. Management says the latest investment will be used for new acquisitions, site improvements, global expansion, and aggressive marketing. The business competes with Craigslist and eBay’s Kijiji in the classifieds space. OLX is an online classifieds marketplace launched in June 2006 by Fabrice Grinda and Alec Oxenford that targets markets outside the United States. The company positions itself as "Craigslist for the rest of the world" and focuses on improving first‑generation classified technology with Web 2.0 features such as social network widgets, enhanced search, Ajax-based editors, interactive maps, and mobile versions. OLX operates in about 40 countries, supports 15 languages, and has offices in New York, Buenos Aires, Beijing, and Moscow with 92 employees. Its popularity is strongest in markets like Spain, India, Portugal, Mexico, South America, China, and the Philippines, where a white-label partnership with Friendster helped growth. OLX competes with Craigslist and eBay's Kijiji, the latter posing a significant international threat. Financially, OLX has raised $23.5M to date, including a previously undisclosed $10M Series A and a $13.5M Series B.
