Overview
Onchip Biotechnologies has developed and commercialized the On-chip Sort, a cell sorter that uses an exchangeable microchannel chip to deliver cell-damage-free, contamination-free sorting with simple operation and maintenance. In 2022 the company launched the On-chip Droplet Selector, a device that analyzes, separates, and single-dispenses water-in-oil droplets for high-throughput microbial screening and single-cell dispensing. The Droplet Selector can screen from populations on the order of 10^6 cells and is claimed to provide up to 1,000× efficiency improvements over conventional methods. The company positions its technology as foundational for bio-based manufacturing and wider microbial utilization to address environmental and economic challenges. Onchip has received recognition for its technology, including a Special Prize at the Tokyo Venture Technology Awards in November 2023 and the Small and Medium Enterprise Agency Director Award for New Excellent Technologies/New Products in April 2024. To support international expansion, the company recently completed a capital increase.
