Overview
Onavo makes a money-saving, data-compressing mobile app that runs in the background to monitor users' mobile data usage. When a user accesses data the app routes traffic in a compressed format through Onavo's cloud servers before the data reaches the carrier, effectively acting as a proxy. On iOS the company says the app can compress data by up to 80%; the Android version currently only warns users about data-hogging apps and does not compress data. The product is aimed at price-conscious consumers and travelers who want to reduce mobile data costs. The company and its solution are positioned as potentially compelling to carriers as well as consumers given exponential mobile data growth. Onavo recently raised new funding (details below). Onavo offers a data‑shrinking iOS app that reduces users' mobile data consumption. In its first 20 days since launch the app saved users approximately 500 GB of data. The service processed traffic from more than 30,000 different apps during that period. Onavo has seen particularly strong demand from travelers aiming to save on roaming and from domestic users with capped plans. The app was also released for iPad. Financially, the company announced a $3M Round A led by Sequoia Capital with participation from Magma Venture Partners.
