One Block Off the Grid (1BOG) is a platform that groups homeowners to secure competitive pricing for solar-panel installations. The site uses an aerial Google Maps UI that lets users outline their roof and get detailed cost, leasing, rebate and payback options. On average 1BOG says it saves customers about 15% versus typical bids. The company facilitated more than 600 installations in 2009, most occurring in the fourth quarter, and plans to install five-to-ten times that number the following year. 1BOG is a for-profit spinout from Virgance and is positioned as a lean, high-growth company aimed at accelerating solar adoption. The Series A funding will be used to hire and grow operations.
