Overview
One Earth Designs was the maker of the SolSource solar cooker, a device that harnessed solar energy at about 90% efficiency to enable zero-emissions cooking. The Burlingame, California–based company was founded in 2012 by Dr. Catlin Power, who holds a doctorate from Harvard, two solar‑energy patents, and served on a technical advisory committee to the International Standards Organization. The company had announced a next product: a solar battery system that stores energy in organic molecules over multiple days. One Earth Designs announced it would cease operations as of January 1, 2020, while its non‑profit branch said it would continue humanitarian projects and further development of solar‑thermal technologies with partners worldwide. Customers were told they could still buy SolSource cookers from SIC in the US and Asia or from Solar Brothers in Europe, and limited customer service would be offered through June 30, 2020, with no refunds after cessation. The company noted its products had reached families in more than 70 countries and had received global invention awards and recognition from organizations including MIT, the U.S. National Science Foundation, and the United Nations.
