Founded by serial entrepreneur Steve Kirsch, San Jose-based OneID offers a digital identity platform that replaces traditional usernames and passwords with public key cryptography, enabling secure authentication and one-click checkout across PCs, smartphones, and tablets. The service encrypts payment and address information in a distributed architecture so that only a user’s device can decrypt it, positioning the product as a more secure alternative to existing single sign-on solutions like Facebook Connect. According to the company, OneID is already live on more than 1,000 websites that collectively reach over 100 million users, giving it an initial beachhead of adoption. OneID’s technology was built by Kirsch alongside engineers Jim Fenton, Adam Back, and Bobby Beckmann. Veteran security executive Alex Doll has just joined as CEO, with Kirsch moving to the CTO role, signaling a focus on scaling operations and partnership outreach. Backed by new capital, the company plans to expand its footprint aggressively to add “zeroes” to its current deployment numbers. To support this growth, board oversight now includes Khosla Ventures GP Shirish Sathaye and North Bridge Partner Jonathan Heiliger.
